Overview
The whitepaper explains the core technology and advantages of photon-counting CT (PCCT) as implemented in the NAEOTOM Alpha® CT scanner by Siemens Healthineers — focusing on how this new detector technology improves image quality, spectral data, workflow, and clinical performance compared with conventional CT systems.
1) Fundamental Technology: QuantaMax™ Photon-Counting Detector
- Direct photon conversion:
The QuantaMax™ detector uses a cadmium telluride (CdTe) semiconductor that directly converts X-ray photons into electrical signals without an intermediate light stage — unlike conventional energy-integrating detectors (EIDs). This preserves energy information per photon and eliminates electronic noise. - Intrinsic spectral sensitivity:
Each photon is measured and categorized into energy bins during acquisition, giving spectral (multi-energy) data in every scan without dual-energy techniques. - Higher spatial resolution:
Smaller detector pixel size and elimination of “dead zones” between pixels allows much higher spatial resolution (e.g., ~0.2 mm in-plane with ultra-high-resolution mode).
2) Benefits Over Conventional CT
• Spatial Resolution & Detail
- Improved image sharpness enables clear visualization of fine structures — important for clinical tasks like vascular detail or small lesion detection.
• Contrast & Noise
- Improved contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR): More efficient photon capture and noise elimination allow better image contrast without increasing dose.
- Better iodine visualization: Equal photon energy weighting increases enhancement from contrast agents, enabling reduced contrast dose potentially.
• Spectral Imaging Always On
- Spectral data (multi-energy information) is acquired in every scan, allowing advanced reconstructions such as virtual monoenergetic images, iodine maps, and material differentiation without needing separate dual-energy scans.
• Dose Efficiency
- Higher detector efficiency and noise elimination enable equal or better image quality at the same or lower radiation dose compared to standard CT.
3) Dual Source & Scanning Capabilities
- NAEOTOM Alpha pairs the QuantaMax™ detector with dual-source CT architecture and powerful X-ray tubes. This maintains excellent temporal resolution and supports high-speed and high-pitch scanning modes (e.g., Turbo Flash), benefiting a range of clinical protocols including cardiac and pediatric imaging.
4) Clinical & Workflow Advantages
Enhanced Clinical Imaging
- The combination of spectral data and high spatial resolution supports more precise diagnostic imaging (e.g., better tissue characterization, improved visualization of subtle anatomy).
Workflow & Data
- The technology allows more automated and efficient workflows with advanced reconstruction engines handling increased data rates and delivering rich information sets to radiologists.
5) Technical Highlights
- No intermediate light conversion — direct photon charge generation improves accuracy.
- Up to 6–8× more raw data compared to conventional dual-source systems.
- Spectral imaging with up to four energy bins — enabling comprehensive material and tissue analysis.
